Nitrous oxide has been in use in the U.S. since the 1800s, and it’s often referred to as “laughing gas” for good reason. This type of sedation dentistry can make you so relaxed that you might just start giggling during your dental appointment.
You inhale the laughing gas during your dental treatment, and it relaxes you so that you’re not anxious. Novocain, which is administered through a needle, is what actually numbs the area of treatment, but the nitrous oxide takes the edge off your awareness.
Once you’re given nitrous oxide, you’ll feel the calming effects in seconds. Not all general dentists in the Atlanta area offer laughing gas to their patients, but most dentists who specialize in sedation dentistry do. It’s the mildest type of sedation dentistry, requested by many patients who feel mild anxiety about visiting the dentist.
To help you further relax, many sedation dentists also offer music and/or televisions in their treatment rooms, and these distractions can help your dental visit pass more quickly.
